"Well now your hunters are being the hunted too." Valerie said to the criminals.

Dr. Valerie Cammon was a major character in Hydra (2009). She was played by Polly Shannon.

Overview[]

Valerie was an archaeologist who's so obsessed with finding treasures and achieving her career.

She also seems to be a confident and shrewd person. In the beginning, even if her colleagues sensed danger and urged her to escape, she would still insist on executing the original plan; two months later, when Tim Nolan and other criminals wanted to work with her to escape from the uninhabited island, she did not intend to help them unconditionally, but put forward unreasonable conditions in the hope that Nolan would meet them.

Biography[]

At the beginning of the movie, Valerie and three other colleagues discovered an uninhabited island. They believed that valuable ancient Greek artifacts might be hidden here, and took a boat to the island on a rainy day. During this period, an earthquake occurred on the island. Valerie's colleague Scott felt the danger, but Valerie remained unmoved and insisted on continuing the investigation. Then Lernaean Hydra appeared, and all three of Valerie's colleagues were eaten. Valerie was hiding in the corner of the cave. Hydra was about to discover her, but a sudden earthquake drew Hydra's attention away, and Valerie took the opportunity to escape from the cave, she was fortunate to escape. After confirming that Hydra was gone, she planned to return to the boat and escape, but when she escaped to the beach, she found that the boat had sunk due to heavy rain, and she could only cry desperately in the grass.

Two months later, a group of billionaires planned a criminal hunting game. They set the location on the same island, and kidnapped four criminals as prey. The four criminals were Tim Nolan and Gwen Russell, Bob Crick and Ronnie Kaplan, in which experienced ex-soldier Nolan was the leader, leading three other criminals on the island prepare for. After one of the wealthy Hunter "Williams" killed Bob Crick, Valerie, who had survived on the uninhabited island for two months, ran in panic between Williams and the remaining three criminals, yelled "run!" and then continued running away, and then Lernaean Hydra chases after her. The three criminals escape with Valerie, but Williams is injured by Nolan's trap and unable to escape, and was eaten by Lernaean Hydra.

After Valerie and the criminals explained each other's origins, she decided to act together with the criminals. Valerie told the criminals where she hid the materials, and Nolan used Valerie's materials to repair the broken walkie-talkie and successfully contacted "Sweet", one of the game designers. Nolan originally wanted to anger the wealthy people on the boat, lure them to an uninhabited island, and let three other people, including Valerie, steal that boat secretly. However, after talking to Sweet, Nolan learned that himself, Gwen and Ronnie were GPS has been implanted in their bodies, and they are unable to carry out their original plan.

But soon, Nolan thought that Valerie's body had not been implanted with a GPS, and hoped that Valerie could use this advantage to help them, but Valerie refused. She thought that she had lost everything on this island, and she was also survived for a long time on this uninhabited island, so she doesn't want to waste her life on these criminals. In fact, Valerie wants to use her advantage to negotiate terms with Nolan. She can help Nolan and others, but Nolan must first help her kill the Hydra and avenge everything that happened to her. In order to escape from the uninhabited island with others, Nolan could only agree to Valerie's unreasonable request.

Later, Valerie brought Nolan, Gwen and Ronnie to the cave entrance at the beginning of the movie. Valerie told Nolan only the "Sword of Hercules" could completely kill the Hydra, and he must first pass the "test of faith", do something he thinks is impossible. Valerie doesn't know the details of the test, she want go into the cave with Nolan. But Nolan asked Valerie to stay outside the cave to guard against Sweet who might come to hunt them down, and himself and two others went into the cave to find the sword. Valerie agreed and stayed outside the cave, watching the three criminals enter the cave.

Nolan and others found a small hole in the cave, which was full of lava. Nolan guessed that this might be the test of faith. When Nolan hesitated to put his hand into the hole, Sweet took the gun and standing behind the three criminals. Sweet shot Ronnie in the stomach first, Gwen was frightened and knelt on the ground trying to stop Ronnie from bleeding. Just as Sweet was about to kill Nolan, Valerie rushed over again, followed by the Hydra. After Hydra chased Valerie into the cave, it attacked Sweet who was closest and slowly gnawed away at Sweet's body. Valerie ran to Nolan and found Nolan looking at the lava hole and hesitating. Valerie also realized that the Sword of Hercules was probably in the hole. She kept urging Nolan to get the sword, but Nolan was still hesitant. Meanwhile, Sweet had been devoured, and Hydra turned her attention to the others, deciding to attack Gwen first.

Finally, Valerie makes a difficult and puzzling decision. When Hydra ran towards Gwen, Valerie stood in front of Gwen. Hydra paused briefly because of Valerie's sudden appearance. Meanwhile, Valerie continues to urge Nolan to bring out the Sword of Hercules. At this time, Nolan finally reached into the lava cave. If he could successfully take out the sword, he would have a chance to save others. Unfortunately, before Nolan could take out the sword, Valerie let out a shrill scream, and her scream was quickly cut off, because the Hydra instantly tore her into pieces with its five big mouths and completely, then ate her whole body in seconds.

After two months of struggling to survive, Valerie still fell prey to the Hydra like her other colleagues, and she also failed to complete her revenge.

Relationships[]

Panos (Co-worker)[]

Valerie did not have a direct conversation with Panos in the movie. She only asked about Panos' situation through the intercom with Dr. Kim.

Dr. Kim (Co-worker)[]

Valerie spoke to Dr. Kim through the walkie-talkie, and when Dr. Kim lost contact after being eaten by the Hydra, Valerie expressed concern.

Scott (Co-worker)[]

Valerie may have looked down on Scott a little. When they were exploring the cave together, Scott uneasily persuaded Valerie to leave, but Valerie just refused and laughed at Scott a little. Until Valerie witnessed Scott being eaten by the Hydra that she realized that what Scott said was right, but it was too late.

Tim Nolan[]

Possibly due to Nolan's status as a former Marine, Valerie seemed to believe in Nolan's strength, But in the end, Nolan's hesitation prevented Valerie from surviving to the end, and even after Valerie was eaten, Nolan didn't care at all about her death.

Gwen Russell[]

Gwen and Valerie didn't have much interaction. The only thing we knew was that Gwen didn't believe Valerie's so-called legend at all. However, when Gwen was targeted by the Hydra in the cave, Valerie was willing to jump out in front of Gwen, and finally let herself be eaten. But even after that, Gwen didn't care at all about Valerie's death.

Ronnie Kaplan[]

Ronnie and Valerie talked several times, and they also sorted out the supplies left by the archaeological team together. Ronnie once thought that those supplies were useless, which made Valerie a little angry.

Learean Hydra (Killer)[]

To the Hydra, Valerie was just food like other intruders, the only difference was that Valerie makes it spend more time chasing. For Valerie, the Hydra is the one she must kill, and she even gives up the chance to escape with the criminals. Unfortunately, before her plan could be accomplished, she instead became a meal for the Hydra.

Trivia[]

  • Valerie was the 12th victim of the Hydra. and the 14th deceased of the whole movie.
  • She was also the first female character to die in this movie.
  • Valerie looked like she had plot armor at first. She managed to escape from the massacre at the beginning of the movie, and survived for two full months on an uninhabited island haunted by Hydra, but she still died randomly in the end like a minor character.
  • Compared to other characters who were eaten by the Hydra, Valerie's death scene didn't have much description. When Hydra tore her apart, it just spattered a lot of plasma and a few pieces of flesh.
